The Can’t Miss

What’s the story behind the name Camp Squid?

George Stuck, a Navy Veteran captained the vessel The Can’t Miss, a charter boat docked at Garrison Bight Marina in Key West, Florida during the 1990’s. George and his first mate son Trent, Bubba and a couple of deck hands enjoyed fishing expeditions that provided a colorful and knowledgeable fishing experience. The Can’t Miss also unloaded cruise ship passengers at Mallory Square in downtown Key West in the days before larger cruise ships and permanent docks where available. He greeted and answered cruise ship passenger’s questions with the knowledge of a Navy veteran and the cheerfulness of a 5-star tour guide.

Captian Squid & his daughter Kendra (your happy-camper host)

My father has always been a servant leader meaning he would roll-up his sleeves and work along side his crew and prepare for the next fishing outing by doing routine chores and bait preparation. The usual bait was, you guessed it, squid. His crew actually bestowed the nickname Captain Squid on him from their love and respect for him and his servant leadership qualities. Squid bait and George’s knowledge and cheerful demeanor further conflated into his nickname Captain Squid. George also served and retired from a 25-year career in the State of Michigan, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officer and provides a safe environment for women, children, and all guests at Camp Squid Off-The-Grid!
